We wanted to provide you with an exciting announcement about the future of our club. Despite the unfortunate year we have faced, we are committed more than ever to continue with the growth of our family club and moving forward are delighted to announce we are appointing BELLA IORIA as our Girls Director. After becoming a key figure in Women’s college coaching, Coach Bella has earned the honor of becoming a part of history for our club and takes over the responsibilities immediately. Moving forward as we transition; all enquiries, information, updates etc will come from and should be directed to towards Coach Bella and you can find a little bit more about her below:
Iorio comes back to Asheville, N.C. after spending the past couple of years in Wilson, NC as assistant at Barton College, and previously was as an Assistant for Concord (W.Va.) where she helped lead the Mountain Lions to the Mountain East Conference Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Alongside her role with Shield, Iorio will also serve as the new assistant for UNCA Women’s program.
Iorio played four years at UNC Asheville (2015-18) where she started 33 games over the final two seasons as a midfielder and was a team captain in 2017 and 2018. Ioria, a native of Clayton, N.C., also played for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 2010 to 2013.
Iorio graduated from UNC Asheville in 2019 with a degree in health and wellness promotion and earned her master’s degree in Concord in May of 2021 in health promotion. Iorio also coached at the Wilson Youth Soccer Association, as well as HFC.
Over the last few years our boys’ side of the club has grown from strength to strength with our club now proud to have teams from U7-U18. Our long term aim as a club is to replicate the same success for the girls, as we look to not only get more girls playing football but also give them the opportunity to do so in our family club. Our hopes in the appointment of our Women’s Director are to:
- Create the opportunities for our first 9v9 girls team this year (2010/2011s)
- Create younger 11v11 teams (2009>2006s)
- Addition of more inspiring female role models to our coaching staff
We hope that you are as excited as we are by this appointment and ask that you continue to spread the word regarding our club and keep a look out for upcoming girls events this Fall! Please help us by congratulating Coach Bella when you see her around 😄
