We adhere to the philosophy that children learn best when everyone is having fun.

Starting with the youngest age groups, our program is designed to teach children to engage others with respect and civility, creating space for everyone to enjoy the game. In this way, we teach them to honor the game and each other.

As a player graduates from one age group to the next, the skills taught are increasingly advanced. Within the foundational framework of good sportsmanship, each child is given the chance to blossom and grow. And when we say each child, we mean it. Every participant in Shield Recreation division receives the same attention and instruction as all others. By modeling our dedication to the kids, we encourage their commitment to the sport and to their teammates.

By the time a child reaches the upper age groups of the recreation division, he or she will have learned how to play the game with honor, to play the game with commitment, and to play the game with excellence.

We are proud to be entrusted to play a small part in the nurturing of your child as an honorable citizen of the world.

Our Coaching Commitment

Our coaching curriculum will be developed and overseen by our coaches, Nathan Watt and Jennifer 'KAKA' Cudjoe who bring with them an international style of coaching backed by tremendous talent, experience, passion and an unparalleled ability to teach our youth the world's favorite game. And the program as a whole will adhere to USClub and USYSA guidelines.

While our coaches will be parent volunteers, they will be given plenty of instruction/training and will be supported by the “top tier” of our coaching resources. So even the youngest players will get to experience true professional coaching interaction on a regular basis. This, again, is a first in our region.

The intent of our program is not only to teach basic skills, but also to help players learn the values of respecting the game, respecting their teammates and other players, and respecting themselves. They will learn what it means to be a contributing member of a team, a club and a community.

Where will trainings be held?

Everywhere!  We have secured fields in the North, Central, South, and Eastern regions of Buncombe county. We will make every attempt to place your player at the field which is closest for you to get to.  Our intent is to eliminate lengthy travel times. By partnering with public and private schools, churches, and other youth oriented groups and facilities, Shield will be able to offer players and families many opportunities that have been unavailable to Recreation soccer in our region.

The Shield Jamboree Series

While previously exclusive through schools and clubs at the competitive level, Shield will be hosting "several" Recreation Jamborees, inviting not only our Rec teams to participate, but invitations will be extended to many of our out of town soccer Club clubs including CESA, SCYSA, VYSA, and TSSA just to name a few. We want all of our Rec players to enjoy the game with players from different regions—a FIRST for Recreation Soccer here in Asheville. These will be “friendly” events, encouraging the pure enjoyment of being a part of a team.

Summer Camps

There will be an extensive Summer camp program, consisting of several dates, geared specifically for your players age/ skill group, run by international players, at an incredibly low price (some events will be free).
